House rules

These rules are current yet subject to change over time. Every resident must agree to these rules before move-in and will review them with their house manager.

Upward Bound House Rules

These rules exist to support a safe, structured, and respectful environment for all residents. All residents are expected to read, understand, sign these rules upon moving in, and live by them.

Sobriety

  • Residents must maintain complete abstinence from alcohol, illegal drugs, and the non-prescribed use of any controlled substances.
  • Prescription medications must be disclosed to house management and stored securely. Do not share medications with others.
  • If a resident relapses, they must notify house management immediately. Continued residency will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Drug and alcohol testing may be conducted at any time, with or without advance notice.

Employment & Accountability

  • All residents must be actively employed, enrolled in school, or engaged in a structured job search upon move in.
  • Residents between jobs must demonstrate active effort (applications, interviews, temp work, etc.) and check in with house management weekly.
  • Attendance at structured recovery groups is strongly encouraged: Please ask if you need help finding a group. No counseling or treatment may take place in the home.

Curfew & Guests

  • Weeknight curfew: 10:00 PM. Weekend curfew: 12:00 AM. Notify house management in advance if you will be out later.
  • Overnight stays away from the house require prior approval. Limit is one per week.
  • Guests are welcome during designated hours: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM. No overnight guests.
  • Anyone known to be actively using substances are not permitted in the home.

Chores & Common Areas

  • Each resident is assigned weekly chores on a rotating schedule. See the posted chore chart. You are free to trade chores with each other.
  • Common areas — kitchen, bathrooms, living room — must be cleaned regularly and maintained to a shared standard of tidiness.
  • Dishes must be washed, dried, and put away the same day they are used.
  • Personal belongings should be kept in your room and not left in shared spaces.
  • Trash and recycling must be taken out according to the house schedule.

Respect & Conduct

  • Treat all housemates with dignity. Harassment, intimidation, threats, or physical aggression of any kind will result in immediate removal.
  • Keep noise at a reasonable level. Everyone must be quiet after 9:30 PM.
  • Disputes between residents should be raised calmly or brought to house management — not handled through confrontation.
  • No weapons of any kind are permitted on the premises.
  • Residents are expected to be honest with house management and with each other.

Pets

  • No pets of any kind are permitted.

Finances

  • Rent is due on the 1st of each month. A grace period of 2 days applies; late fees may apply after that. If you will be late, you must notify house management at least 3 days ahead of time.
  • Residents are responsible for their own food, toiletries, and personal expenses.

Property & Safety

  • No smoking inside the house. Smoking is permitted outside as long as trash is thrown away properly.
  • Residents are responsible for any damage to the property beyond normal wear and tear.
  • Do not share house keys or door codes with anyone at any time.
  • In case of emergency, call 911 immediately and then notify house management.

House Meetings

  • Attendance at weekly house meetings is mandatory. These are held Sunday evening at 7:30 PM, unless there's an exception.
